Epitalon Overview

Epitalon, also written Epithalon, is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, commonly abbreviated AEDG. It was developed at the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology on the basis of the amino acid composition of epithalamin, a peptide extract of the pineal gland. It is not an exact analogue of that extract: epithalamin is a mixture extracted from tissue and Epitalon is a defined four residue peptide. Epitalon is not an approved medicine in Canada or the United States, and the material supplied here is a research chemical. The 50mg presentation suits work that consumes larger quantities, such as extended cell culture series.

The research interest in Epitalon comes mainly from cell culture work on telomerase. A 2003 study in human diploid fibroblast cultures reported induction of the telomerase catalytic subunit, telomerase activity and telomere elongation, with treated cells completing additional divisions relative to controls. Much of the published work comes from the group that developed the peptide, and a more recent paper on telomere length in human cell lines has since carried a published correction. The evidence base is in vitro and animal work, not controlled human trials.

Research Context
Endpoints that have been examined in the published literature include:

• Gene expression: Later work has examined gene expression and protein synthesis during neurogenesis in cell models.
